Margaret River Wineries: Western Australia’s Pride for Many Decades

Vineyards have been part of the Australian landscape since the late 1700s when wine production began at Farm Cove, a settlement in New South Wales. With so many immigrants arriving from Europe, vineyards began to expand across the country and by the early 1900s Britain was already importing over 500,000 gallons of Australian wine annually. The Margaret River wine area: By the middle of the 20th century Australia had a well established wine industry, although the quality of most of it fell short compared to wines of the major European growing areas. It was in 1967 that Dr. Tom Cullity planted the first vines in the Margaret River area. Now, Margaret River has 12,000 acres of vines, with 187 wineries that crush over 35,000 tonnes of grapes from 215 vineyards - every year.
